HPP Partners with Tearfund Haiti on Earthquake Response

The Earthquake

According to the United States Geological Survey, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck five miles from the town of Petit Trou de Nippes in the western part of Haiti, about 80 miles west of Port-au-Prince, the capital. Two cities, Les Cayes and Jeremie, located in Haiti’s southern peninsula, have reported major devastation with people caught under rubble and buildings collapsed. The quake, which had a depth of seven miles, was felt as far away as Jamaica, 200 miles away.

The Damage

According to Haiti’s Civil Protection Agency, at least 9,900 people are injured and an estimated 1,941 are confirmed dead as of Tuesday, August 17, 2021. In addition, 84,585 homes were destroyed and/or damaged from the earthquake, leaving upwards of 60,000 families homeless. Hospitals, schools, offices and churches also were destroyed or badly damaged.

What is currently being done?

Government rescue workers and Humanitarian Aid groups have established a single operation center in Port-au-Prince to coordinate search and rescue and other earthquake response efforts.

What are the immediate needs?

There is a need for basic supplies such as food kits, drinking water, hygiene kits, medical supplies, and temporary shelter, such as tents/tarps.
